Mizoram is a hill state where bamboo is the default material and the church is the default institution. Building, fencing, carrying, weaving and the Cheraw dance all start with bamboo. Its literacy rate is among the highest in India less because of state investment than because missionary schooling arrived early and village churches kept running schools afterwards — an institutional path worth comparing with Kerala's.

Shifting cultivation and the shortening fallow
Jhum is what works on slopes too steep to plough. It stops working when the fallow drops from twenty years to three — and that is a land-pressure problem, not a farming problem.

The corridor that holds the northeast
Seven states hang off one narrow neck of land. That neck explains the region's prices and its distance from everything else more than any border does.

Chapchar Kut and the bamboo beat
A spring festival timed to the clearing of the jhum fields. The dance is a rhythm that keeps feet out of the clapping bamboo — the game is the point.

The hill plate: rice, pork, greens
At altitude the plate narrows to three things and gets its flavour from fermentation instead of from spice — because salt and sun are both scarce.

Cheraw and the bamboo rhythm
Two poles, six dancers, one rule. There is no music separate from the rhythm — the rhythm is the music.

Cane and bamboo as cash
The northeast's most traded craft is also its most ordinary object: baskets, sieves and mats, made at home and sold on market day.

The house on stilts
A floor above the ground keeps water, animals and damp out; bamboo flexes in wind. The form is engineering before it is style.
