Tripura is ringed by Bangladesh on three sides, and that geography is the whole story: it was a princely state with a Bengali-speaking court, then Partition and 1971 turned it into a mostly Bengali-speaking state with a tribal minority that had been the majority. Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, with its Bengali and Islamic detailing, is the visible residue of the courtly period; cane and bamboo work is the residue of the older economy.

Shifting cultivation and the shortening fallow
Jhum is what works on slopes too steep to plough. It stops working when the fallow drops from twenty years to three — and that is a land-pressure problem, not a farming problem.

The corridor that holds the northeast
Seven states hang off one narrow neck of land. That neck explains the region's prices and its distance from everything else more than any border does.

Kharchi Puja and the fourteen deities
A state ritual from the royal era that outlived the kingdom: same courtyard, same families, seven days, and a sacrifice the state still attends.

Fermented fish is a base, not a condiment
A spoonful of ngari replaces stock, salt and glutamate at once. That is why the eastern kitchen tastes built rather than seasoned.

Cane and bamboo as cash
The northeast's most traded craft is also its most ordinary object: baskets, sieves and mats, made at home and sold on market day.

The house on stilts
A floor above the ground keeps water, animals and damp out; bamboo flexes in wind. The form is engineering before it is style.

Tea as a labour system
The estates were built as closed settlements with their own housing, hospitals and rules. Labour law still carries the shape of that enclosure.
